KEEPING THE FAITH ACTION ALERT February 24, 2006 THE WEEK IN REVIEW This past week three pro-life bills passed out of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee. They are: SB 123 Conscious Clause for Pharmacists This bill would provide that a pharmacist who states in writing an objection to any abortion shall not be required to fill a prescription for an emergency contraceptive drug which purpose is to induce and effect an abortion. SB 77 Unborn Victims of Violence Act This bill will revise the definition of feticide and will prohibit the voluntary manslaughter of an unborn child at any stage of development that is carried in the womb. It states “A person commits the offense of feticide if he or she willfully and without legal justification causes the death of an unborn child by any injury to the mother of such child, which would be murder if it resulted in the death of the mother and/or causes the death of an unborn child. (Laci’s Law) SB 429 The Full Disclosure Ultrasound Act This would require facilities that perform abortions and facilities of physicians who refer for abortions to have or have access to certain medical equipment that will and will require an ultrasound or sonogram examination of each unborn child prior to an abortion being performed. IN ADDITION, Senator David Shafer (R-48) has introduced a bill that would create the newborn umbilical cord blood initiative for stem cell research. The bill would also ban human cloning. The measure, which Shafer calls the “Delivering the Cure Act of 2006” creates the Georgia Commission for the Newborn Umbilical Cord Blood Initiative, and directs it to create a newborn cord blood bank. The legislation also will provide counseling and information to pregnant women about the initiative and how they can donate the newborn’s umbilical cord blood. AND, there will be a
hearing in the Motor Vehicles sub-committee on the Choose Life License
Plate bill at 3:30pm on Monday afternoon in CLOB 606. It is anticipated
it will pass out of that committee and will be heard by the entire Motor
Vehicles committee on Tuesday in CLOB 406. NATIONALLY The National Journal, a non-partisan, political organization has just released their ratings for the most conservative U. S. Senators/Representatives and the most liberal ones. I am pleased to report to you that Senator Johnny Isakson is number six on the list with a score of 87.0 of the most conservative ones, and Senator Saxby Chambliss is number seven with a score of 86.7. For the U. S. House the scores are as follows: Congressmen Deal (94.2), Westmoreland (94.2), Norwood (91.3), Linder (89.5, Gingrey (87.5), Price (83.7), Kingston (82), Marshall (49), Barrow (44.3), Bishop (41.5), Scott (39.8), Lewis (4.8), and Congresswoman McKinney (2.3). www.nationaljournal.com MY WEEK On Tuesday, I traveled to Macon, GA to tape a show with Randall Savage, WMAZ – TV called “Close Up.” While there the U. S. Supreme Court’s decision to take up the partial-birth abortion ban came in over the wires, so I was asked to comment on that for the noon news. How exciting! The vote to overturn the ban was a 5-4 decision with Sandra Day O’Connor being the swing vote. I am very hopeful with the latest appointments to the Court (Roberts and Alito) that we will be able to outlaw this most barbaric practice. As I was on my way back, I received a call from WSB-TV and from WXIA-TV to interview on an exhibit coming to Atlanta on March 6 called “Bodies.” This exhibit that will be at the Atlanta Civic Center will display 21 dead bodies that have gone through a process called plastination. The bodies are then skinned so that you can see all the vital organs. It is being promoted as “educational” and “art.” I find it totally disgusting and yet one more sign of the coarsening of our culture. My comments were put on their respective Web sites and as a result I received an extensive review on this exhibit from Maria Kneusel in Colorado. I have her review posted on our Web site on the home page. Go to www.gachristiancoalition.org to read Mrs. Kneusel’s review. Also on Tuesday, I went to the hearing on Immigration Reform at the Capitol. Senator Chip Rogers is doing an excellent job with this legislation. Wednesday night I sat on a panel at Clark University on the issue of Immigration Reform. Of course, I was challenged “as a Christian” why I am in favor of immigration reform. My reply is quite simple. God is a God of order and lawfulness. He cannot contradict His character. Therefore, it is impossible for him to be a God of chaos and lawbreaking. He would be in favor of enforcing the laws as set down by our civil magistrates. Numbers 15:16 states: “One law and one manner shall be for you, and for the stranger that sojourneth with you.” On Thursday, I interviewed with “The Asahi Shimbun,” a Japanese newspaper on Christian involvement in politics both on the state and national levels. Another busy week. I am glad today is Friday!\
