Hi,

I’m back!  Had a wonderful time at St. Simon’s Island with friends.  Ate some really good seafood and most importantly spent time away from politics.  Well, almost…my friends are conservative also (surprise), so the topic did come up from time to time.  Lots of emails to catch up on, so bear with me to get back to you.

I understand there was some problem with the alert I sent out prior to leaving town.  My apologies if you did not get the entire alert.  It is posted on our web site, if you did not get it and would like read what I wrote.  These high tech machines get the best of me from time to time.  As they say, it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

The American Conservative Union has put out their annual “Best and Brightest” members of the Senate and House.  Senator Johnny Isakson received a 100% rating – and in the House, Congressmen Phil Gingrey and Charlie Norwood received a 100% rating.  Congressman John Lewis made their “Worst of the Worst” list with a 0% rating.  If you would like to see how others were rated go to www.conservative.org.

Also, both Senators Chambliss and Isakson voted for the Senate bill to secure our borders.  It was defeated by a vote of 62-36.

The online poll below came today from the American Family Association and thought I would pass it along.  You can view the results by going to www.afa.net – currently there are 29.012 in favor of the Senate’s proposals and 99,233 against.

Certainly, this issue is foremost on the minds of most Americans/Georgians while we watch the protests in the streets of Atlanta and other cities around the country.  It is hard for me to understand the way people who come here illegally believe they have the same rights granted to those who come here legally.  Could that be because those here illegally do not understand our constitution and the rule of law?  Could that be another argument for coming here legally?  I think so.  For those who come to our shores legally, have to go through a study of the founding documents, learn some English and who we are as a people and a nation of laws.  When you are able to just walk across the border, you just walk across the border.  No requirements, no assimilation process, nothing except getting here by whatever means available and then demanding “rights.”

Following the poll, I am including an article written by Rabbi Daniel Lapin of Toward Tradition on the issue.  I believe you will find it interesting and informative.

AFA Online Poll on The Senate Bill Granting Amnesty

Forward this poll to your family and friends.

Do you favor the U.S. Senate proposal dealing with illegal immigration?

The U.S. Senate is studying a proposal on granting amnesty to approximately 12 million illegal immigrants. Here is the proposal in the Senate:

  1. Illegal immigrants who have been here more than five years could apply for legal permanent residency immediately without having to leave the country.
  2. Those here two years to five years would have to go to border entry points and get a visa but could immediately return as temporary workers.
  3. Those here less than two years would have to leave, go back to their home country and wait in line for visas, then return through the regular immigration process.

Thus far, it is uncertain how verification of the length which an illegal immigrant has been in the country will be decided.

Results from the poll will be sent to President George Bush, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, and Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert. In our recent poll asking if securing the border should be the first step in dealing with illegal immigration, more than a quarter million people participated with 94.95% voting "Yes" and 5.05% voting "No."
