KEEPING THE FAITH ACTION ALERT
November 15, 2006
Dear Email Family:
While on the national level we suffered the loss of many pro-family,
pro-life leaders, in Georgia two additional statewide offices went to
the more conservative candidates– that being the Secretary of State and
the Lt. Governor’s office. The State House picked up three additional
seats giving conservatives a total of 106 members. While not picking up
any additional seats in the State Senate, the numbers held (34-22) with
conservatives keeping control of that chamber.
The issues we represent and believe in played an important role in how
the national elections were decided. Democrats recruited pro-life and
more centrist candidates to run in selected districts. Even with that
dynamic in the mix, some races were decided by a very small margin. So,
take heart – the referendum was not on our issues – but rather on
candidates the voters believed had let them down. James Towey, the
former director of the White House office of faith based initiatives,
who’s now president of St. Vincent College in Pennsylvania said:
“Longstanding concerns among conservative religious voters about
abortion, traditional marriage and other family values issues are not
going away.”
With the November elections behind us we are gearing up for the upcoming
2007 Legislative Session, and will be down at the State Capitol in
January working on behalf of issues important to the families of
Georgia. Some of the issues include:
*Ultrasound required for a woman who is seeking an abortion. We look at
this as an educational tool in order for the woman to have all the
information necessary to make an informed decision prior to getting an
abortion that is life changing and at times life threatening to her.
And, for those of us who believe that life begins at conception,
abortion takes an innocent life.
*Ethical and moral stem cell research. We are definitely pro-research
and pro-science. However, we do not want research and experimentation
performed on human embryos. Adult stem cell research is far more
promising. The umbilical cord and placenta are rich in stem cells and we
believe science should explore these promising areas for cures. We will
stand against any research that involves human embryos.
*Parental permission for mental health screenings of minor children.
There is a movement afoot nationwide to have children tested for varying
“mental problems.” We believe that parents, in consultation with their
children’s doctors, should be making the decision about whether or not
their children should be given behavior altering drugs. That kind of
major health decision should not be in the hands of the psychiatric
community and education bureaucrats.
*Relieve the tax burden on Georgia’s families. There is a budget surplus
– and one of the questions on our 2006 Candidate Questionnaire was
regarding returning a portion of the surplus to the tax payer. The
conservative candidates running agreed that tax payers need relief.
*Photo ID required to vote. That decision is now with the courts due to
a lawsuit If the courts overturn the law passed by the legislature in
2006, we will be back with legislation to ensure that those who hold
sway over our elections in Georgia are voting legally.
*Paper ballot trail to ensure our elections are fair, with as little
fraud as possible. There were reports on election night from around the
country about electronic machines failing to perform properly. We
believe there must be a paper trail to protect the integrity of our
elections.
As always, we will be on guard against any moves from the homosexual
lobby to further their agenda.
Please consider making an end-of-the-year tax deductible donation to our
sister organization, Georgia Conservative Coalition Education Fund, Inc.
As we had a very expensive election cycle, we could use your financial
support as we prepare for the 2007 Legislative Session.
The Georgia Christian Alliance staff and board wishes each one of you a
Happy Thanksgiving and blessings during the Christmas season as we
celebrate the birth of Christ.
We appreciate your friendship and support, and thank you for Keeping The
Faith.
