The Cracked Door -  August 21, 2001

On August 9, 2001, President Bush handed down his decision regarding the use of taxpayer dollars to fund human embryo stem cell research. While reiterating his commitment to the protection of human life and his commitment to increase funding for alternative stem cell research, the President agreed to allow federal funding for research on the already 60 existing stem cell lines taken from human embryos.

I understand the President was under great pressure from members of the scientific community and some members of his own party to allow this research to go forward. However, I believe principle should never bow to pressure – political or otherwise.

Using adult stem cells is an ethical alternative, and has proved far more promising than embryonic stem cell research. Further stem cells can be taken from umbilical cords and placentas, and no human life is killed in the process.

It is my opinion that the President’s decision cracked open a door that should have been firmly shut. This limited approval of embryonic stem cell research is not going to satisfy the scientific community. Only one day after his speech, scientists are saying this doesn’t go far enough and it is their hope the door will be flung wide open.

In his closing remarks President Bush said, “As we go forward, I hope we will always be guided by both intellect and heart, by both our capabilities and our conscience. I have made this decision with great care, and I pray it is the right one.”

Sadly, Mr. President, I believe history will prove that it was not.
