Justice, Fairness & The Supreme Court

President Barak Obama's nomination of Federal Appeals Court Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court has resurfaced attention around the basis for which judges should be evaluated and the role they play in administering justice in society.  As we discuss the issues that have polarized the discussion concerning "the rule of law" and "impartiality" of judges, our goal is to transcend common labels such as conservative, liberal, Republican, Democrat.  Instead, we hope to provide a framework for formulating a Biblically-based worldview that is grounded is reasoned analysis in order to engage the hearts and minds "outside the beltway" Americans.

When people think about judges, "justice" is the attribute that most readily comes to mind.  Without preference to race, religion, economics, county club memberships, ethnicity or any other bias, we expect judges to be blindly committed to "the rule of law."  Unfortunately, we have grown accustomed to judicial rulings that leads to head-scratching bewilderment as the plain meaning of the law is often twisted beyond recognition in order to further political or social agendas.

As is the true of all moral and social issues, we should begin our discussion with understanding of what the Bible teaches concerning justice in society.

Justice Comes From God

The Christian concept of justice emanates from the character and will of God.  Isaiah 30:18 states, "For the Lord is a God of justice."  God's passion for justice is a result of His moral perfection just as His condemnation of injustice is a reflection of His character of righteousness.  Closely associated with justice, righteousness can be thought of as a conformity to God's character and is exhibited in fairness, integrity, truthfulness, and honesty.

The Old Testament refers often to justice and righteousness in connection with understanding who God is.  "The Lord loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love" (Psalm 33:5).  "righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne..." (Psalm 89:14).  "The works of his hands are faithful and just" (Psalm 111:7).  "Many seek an audience with a ruler, but it is from the Lord that man gets justice" (Proverbs 29:26).  While scores of other Scriptures can be cited, this brief sampling is sufficient to isolate the origin and basis for justice - it begins with a Creator God.
